For me, it would be to have a breakfast bar or island that you could actually sit at. It would cut out the need to clear the dishes from the kitchen table to the sink area. Perhaps I'm lazy, but it drives me nuts!

Plus, I can envision fun retro red bar stools to spice up the kitchen. But...sadly, there is not room in my current kitchen. Maybe the next home!

What about you?

Marble. And wood. If I could, I'd have the granite removed and replace it with beautiful aged wood counters and a slab of marble. Italian kitchens are amongst the most loved in the world and I'm finally appreciating why.

That sounds gorgeous! What color marble would you opt for? And what would you do for backsplash?

Susan, I keep envisioning those retro red stools - Now I want some too! We have a b'fast counter, but rarely use it unless it's to sit there with our laptops.

Carrera Marble for me, at least in my visual :) . You know, I tend to like plain painted back splashes. I know they can be tedious to keep clean, but I figure I can repaint the area if I need to and it's so easy to dress up and change out the look of the area with glass framed artwork (that's even easier to clean!)

I currently have a granite back splash behind the stove and I so dislike the busy-ness of it.

Oh, that would be beautiful. I have painted backsplash too - great for when I change my mind frequently (which I do!). I did put a stainless steel panel behind the stove, however.

Here are some retro bar stools I blogged about last month:

I could design a whole kitchen around this!

OK, I love that stool. I think mostly because it reminds me of the "timeout" stool my mother kept in the kitchen - looked just like that one except ours was a cream color. I'm pretty sure I would have enjoyed time out a whole lot more if I had to sit on a fire engine red stool

I'm considering making a cut out pass through opening in my kitchen wall to let in more sunlight from the livingroom/diningroom on the other side. I can I know if I would like it or not?

You can't go wrong with more natural light in my opinion! Plus, if I'm cooking, I like to keep tabs on what's going on in the other rooms so I don't feel cut off from the action (and make sure the kids are behaving). Tell me more about your project - it sounds interesting! Any pics to show?

Agreed, more natural light ALWAYS better!

I'd love to paint my kitchen and put in a new backsplash. We haven't done anything since we moved in!
